Sts'ailes Tribe and Sa:sq'ets
The Sts'ailes (also known as Chehalis) people are from the lower mainland region of British Columbia, Canada. The name Sts'ailes means "the beating heart."
Sa:sq'ets - Caretaker of the Land
The Sts'ailes believe that Sa:sq'ets, or the anglicized pronunciation, Sasquatch, is the caretaker of all the lands and is not something to be feared, but rather, revered. The being is also referred to as Slalikum, or "shapes shifter," as they are only seen if they want to be seen. As told by Kelsey Charlie, a Sts'ailes Sasquatch dancer, and recorded in the Harrison Hot Springs Sasquatch Museum, "On moonlit nights, the way our elders told us, that is when you are not thinking when you're not distracted you are focused on what is in front of you so it is that time if the light hits it right you can see it you might be able to see that. That is what I was told. If you are at the right place at the right time you will see him roaming through the land." The Sasquatch dancers perform traditional dances at ceremonies and other events to honor the Sasquatch.
